University of Richmond

Planning Your Program

Richmond offers a major and a minor in philosophy. Once students declare the philosophy major, typically some time during their sophomore year, they are assigned a faculty member who will serve as their advisor and help them develop a program of study to achieve their educational goals.

The philosophy major requires nine courses. All students must take classes in symbolic logic, ancient Greek philosophy, modern Western philosophy, continental or analytic philosophy, along with a value theory class, and a research methods class.  Students complete their major by completing at least three courses from a wide range of philosophy electives.  Students seeking even more challenge and immersion in philosophy can apply to the departmental honors program.

In addition to demanding coursework, students enjoy unparalleled opportunities for research and experiential learning that reinforce the material they are learning in the classroom. It is the combination of these experiences inside and outside the classroom that make the University of Richmond philosophy majors so successful after graduation.
