Experiential Learning

Four walls can’t contain an entire education. That’s why, at Richmond, most students extend their educations by participating in experiential learning opportunities. They’re the chance to take what you’ve learned in the classroom and apply it to the real world, either via research, an internship or study abroad.

Internships

Because philosophy prepares students to enter nearly every imaginable career, internships become an important tool for majors to narrow their interests and set goals for what they’ll accomplish after graduation. Students can complete internships in fields like law and business, communications and even the sciences. They can work for non-profits, government agencies and corporations. It’s all up to them. Regardless of their interests, students find that potential employers are impressed by the critical thinking skills philosophy majors bring to the workplace.

The Career Development Center can help you secure internships that will suit your professional interests.

Study Abroad

The University of Richmond was recently recognized as the “Hottest College for International Studies” and it’s no wonder. Nearly 70 percent of students study abroad. Often, their travels inspire a major thesis topic and lead to more in-depth research upon their return to Richmond. Philosophy majors routinely spend a summer, semester or year studying around the world.
